Setting up Newsgroup Client
Here are the main steps you take to set up your newsreader. The exact details will vary between
readers, but the basic steps should be the same.
- Gather the relevant information, ie the address of the news server. This will probably be
something like news.clear.net.nz or news.maxnet.co.nz. You should be able to get
this info from your ISP's web site.
- Configure the newsreader. You can do this off line. This will be under a menu called
Settings or Tools or Options or similar. Use this to create an account (where you set the
address of the news server) and an identity (where you put in your details, like name and
mungled email address).
- Download the list of newsgroups from the server. This is quite a bit download so it will
take a while. The newsreader may show a count as it goes, and this might go up to 50,000 groups.
- Select one or more groups, and subscribe to these. Generally the newsreader will list the
subscribed ones in a panel on the left.
- Click on a subscribed group to get the latest articles. This downloads the recent headers
(ie only the subject lines). Click on a header to download the body of that post.
